How can I come up with singing rhythm?

I want to be able to turn my poems into songs. I was trying to sing
one of them, but I have no idea what rhythm to sing to. I'm singing
for this band during their practice Friday. I wrote a poem to their
music. Should I sing in the rhythm of the guitar? I have no idea. I
want to be able to sing any poem I write.
